Few things can make the winter holidays feel quite so festive as a Christmas hat. Whether it’s a wool cap to keep your ears warm or green and red jester’s hat complete with bells, hats are as important to the Christmas holiday as reindeer or mangers.
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily translate into every member of your family wanting to spend the day with a Santa Claus hat or an elf beanie or – for the young at heart – fake reindeer antlers.
The key is to allow your hat to somehow contain the magic of Christmas. Wear a hat that someone special made for you. Or one that makes your co-workers smile. Or one that makes little kids gaze up at you in awe.
And if you are having a hard time figuring out how to decide what type of Christmas hat is right for you, then consider ways to bring the spirit of holiday hats into your life without actually plopping one on your head.
Think for a moment about Santa’s hat – that red and white fur-trimmed staple of Christmas. How about making some nice Santa hat ornaments for your Christmas tree?
Get yourself some red felt and cotton balls. You will also need some gold thread. These ornaments take approximately half an hour to make, and are a great project for children or senior citizens with a crafty inclination.
Cut a triangle from the red felt, but be sure that the bottom line is rounded out. You don’t want it to be too small, but avoid making it too large either. Remember, it’s going to hang on a tree!
Using the gold ribbon, make a loop and attach it to the hat’s top with a little dab of craft glue.
As that dries, pick up the red felt triangle and roll it into a cone shape. Glue it tight. Once the glue has dried and the hat can stand on its own, grab the cotton balls and tug at them – get them to where they are a bit wispy and extended. Glue them to the bottom perimeter of your hat. Add one to the top for a pom pom if you like.
You’re ready now to hang your new Christmas hat ornament on the tree!
Once you’ve gotten a few under your belt, try your hand at some other hats. How about some green felt for a little elf cap? You are only as limited as your imagination!
