Losing Weight When it is really Necessary: Sleeve gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy or obesity surgery had been a sufficient preference for obese people who wanted to lose weight. This process helps the person in losing weight by controlling the amount of food that can be eaten – it restricts the food from entering the stomach by removing at least 85% of the stomach. The portion that is being removed is the part that extends the most.
The volume of the stomach is reduced by dividing and stapling it vertically. The remaining portion of the stomach is shaped like a thin banana and weighs only from 1 to 5 ounces – this part is least likely to stretch and it generates a considerable resistance to a large amount of food. A little amount of food intake is already enough for the person to be full.
The sections of the stomach that emits the hormone called Ghrelin is the one that is being removed. Ghrelin is being targeted in this surgery because it is mainly responsible for appetite and hunger. Even though the stomach capacity is being reduced, the stomach functions are still the same and most of the foods can be consumed, but only in lesser amounts.
After the surgery, the stomach nerves and the pylorus (outlet valve) stay whole and still doing their functions to the stomach while significantly sinking its dimension. This procedure may be surgical, but it is considered as less invasive. Compared to other weight loss surgery, sleeve gastrectomy provides less pain, fewer wounds, and a faster recovery.
Because their stomachs are restricted, the patients could lose more than a hundred pounds after they had a sleeve gastrectomy. This drastic weight loss improves the physical condition of the patients and reduces their chances of developing other medical problems that are related with obesity.
Based on studies, sleeve gastrectomy is a safe way for heavier people to lose weight. All people who underwent a weight loss surgery are at risk of weight regain, but with sleeve gastrectomy, if the weight loss had been insufficient, it is reasonably simple to adjust to another procedure. Patient who has gone through this surgery is recommended to sustain an exercise pattern and a good dietary habit to maintain a lighter weight.
