An oak floor looks spectacular, but it is very expensive. If you have seen the much lower costs involved in buying and installing a similar laminate floor you may have been tempted to compromise as that is so much more affordable. While there are certainly quality laminates available at reasonable prices, it is better to save up and hold out for the real thing, if you can. Oak really is the best stuff. Choose real oak flooring over laminate for the following reasons.
Although laminate looks good, you will always find buyers want to know if the flooring is genuine wood or not. Some will be put off by the fact that you installed laminate, while others won’t mind, but most will be thrilled by a genuine hardwood floor.
2. A More Realistic Look
Very cheap laminates have a particularly unrealistic plastic look and also sound hollow too, but even quality laminate, as it is created by machine and not by nature, cannot have the genuine variations that you get with a real wood floor. That natural look is part of the beauty, which you lose with laminate, although the overall look can be great.
3. Ability to Renew
A good quality laminate floor is tough, and many of the best are guaranteed for ten years or more, but if you damage your floor for any reason, there is little you can do other than replace the whole thing. It is just tough if the surface gets dull, dented or scratched. With solid oak flooring, there is always the possibility of sanding the floor and resealing the planks, to reveal a completely new surface, and you can do that process multiple times depending on the thickness of the wood. If you plan to stay in your home a long time, this means that you can revive your floor as needed, at very little additional cost.
